Creative Cognitions FAQ

We know starting therapy can come with lots of questions — and that’s completely normal. Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common queries about our services, session details, rebates, and what to expect. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to get in touch — we’re always happy to help.

How long is a standard session?

A standard session for psychological treatment is 50-55 minutes in length.

Do you accept DVA referrals?

Natalie does accept DVA referrals but only if prior financial approval is obtained to charge her clinical rate. Please give us a call or email us to find out the steps involved in attempting to obtain this approval from DVA. Please note this process can take up to 5 weeks and it is up to DVA to approve to reject the application. Every effort will be made on your behalf to try and obtain this approval from DVA as we understand finding a DVA bulk billing Psychologist can be very difficult.

How do I get my Medicare rebate and how much is it?

Our fantastic virtual assistance will process both your payment and your Medicare rebate for you on the same day of your session. As long as you have your bank details registered with Medicare, you should receive your rebate within 24-48 hours. The most standard Medicare rebates are as follows:

  • 50 minute session with a general psychologist (MBS Code 80110) $96.65
  • 50 minute session with a clinical psychologist (MBS Code 80010) $141.85
What happens when I complete my 10 sessions under the MBS plan?

There are a few options available to you and they include the following:

  • Finalise your treatment with your psychologist
  • Continue to see your psychologist for ongoing treatment and utilise any private health insurance rebates available to you under your cover
  • Continue to see your psychologist and pay the full fee
  • Wait until the next calendar year commences to obtain another MHCP and regain access to another 10 sessions eligible for Medicare rebate.
What happens at the first session?

While each psychologist will have their own approach to therapy and the initial session, the first session is ideally designed to get to know you and to determine what has bought you to therapy. We endeavour to develop a good understanding of your history, symptoms, current life situation and most importantly your goals for therapy. We understand that the first session can feel daunting and although this may be your first session, rest assured your psychologist has done this thousands of times before so you are in good hands. They will structure the session and lead it where it needs to go and most of all, leave you feeling heard, validated and confident about taking the first step in your psychology journey.

Do I need a referral to see a Psychologist?

No, you do not need a referral from a GP to see a Psychologist. However, if you want to be able to claim the Medicare rebate, you will need to have a valid GP referral.

How many sessions will I need?

The average number of treatment sessions is between 8 and 12 sessions. Some individuals complete only 6 where some stay on for longer term periods. Your therapist will be able to give you a better indication of how many sessions of treatment you may need once your treatment has commenced.

Can I use a private health and Medicare rebate for the same session

No you are unable to use both Medicare and private health rebates for the same session.

What if I don’t feel comfortable with my therapist?

A strong therapeutic relationship is essential to progress in your mental health journey, and at Creative Cognitions, we understand that not everyone gels well together. If for any reason you are uncomfortable or things just don’t feel right with your therapist please email us at admin@creativecognitions.com.au and we will endeavour to find you a new psychologist either within the clinic or if that is not appropriate, at an alternate clinic close by. Your recovery and comfort is the most important thing to us.
